Common ways are clinical( hand on) and x rays examination .Dentist uses an explorer to probe the tooth surfaces for cavities. If the explorer catches, it means the instrument has found a weak, acid damaged part of the tooth(cavity).Visual examination can also be done. Teeth that are discolored( usually black or brown) can sometimes indicate dental cavity. X rays are also important in finding cavities.
