Dark Gums Can They Be Made Natural Pink

Smile expresses happiness, success, affection, sensuality. Smile is influenced not only by the position, shape and color of teeth but also the appearance of gums. Appearance of gums is an essential part of beautiful smile.

How Dark Gums can be made Natural Pink

Having natural pink color gums is very important for good smile. Smile looks beautiful if one has beautiful teeth with natural looking pink gums. But that is not always possible. Generally the gums color is same as the skin color. The people from the west are fair and their gum color is also pink mostly. Dark gums are mostly seen in dark skinned people.  The gum discoloration may be present in patches.  The extent of gum discoloration and the intensity is different for different individuals. Dark pigmented gums don’t mean that they are unhealthy and are not an indication of a disease.

What are the causes of Dark Gums

Racial or physiological gingival pigmentation: It is seen as the genetic trait. The main culprit behind this is the black pigment known as Melanin.

The production of melanin increases manifolds in the presence of sunlight. At the same time it is more in the persons having complexion towards darker side. The individuals who are involved in outdoor activity tend to have darker gums. Even the children who are more active outdoor and at the same time have gummy smile are more prone to have dark gums. Once the gums become dark during the childhood they tend to stay that way. The gums around the teeth tend to become dark but the part of the gums which is hidden under the lips has natural pink color.

In certain diseases like Addison’s disease, peutz jeghers syndrome, von recklinghausen’s disease, there is an increase in melanin pigmentation. In case of Addison’s disease, adrenal dysfunction produces isolated patches of discoloration varying from bluish black to brown.

Poor oral hygiene: Gum diseases can occur because of poor oral hygiene which may cause gums pigmentation. There is inflammation, redness and bleeding in case  of gum diseases which may cause darkening of the gums.

Smoking: Smoking also causes dark gums. Tobacco consumers also have darker gums in comparison to non-tobacco consumers.

Medications: Some medication like minocycline, antimalarial agents, tricyclic antidepressants can also cause dark gums.

Metallic fillings: The metallic fillings which get corroded can also cause dark gums.

I'm 15 years old and I am an African American girl. I've had two black dots on my upper gums and I so desperately need to get rid of them. Is this going on anywhere in Illinois? And also, when the surgery is over and the gums are turned back to pink, are there any possibilities that they will turn back to black? Thank you

Depigmentation with laser is mostly used for treatment of dark gums in which the gums dark in color. Whether it can be used for your dark spot or not, can only be decided after clinical examination.

I have a "mole"(dark spot) in my upper gum according to my dentist. She said that there is nothing that can be done. But online I found that Gum depigmetation can be done with a laser. So i don't know what to do? Is there anything that can help me with my problem?

The laser surgery is quite safe but get it done from the specialist who is trained for this. It does not have any side effects if the case selection is good and the procedure is performed accurately. You can discuss with your dentist.

NATALIE, the color of gums is due to pigmentation which is hereditary. Sometimes the gums become dark due to calculus and plaque deposits. for that you need to floss your teeth properly before brushing and after that do mouthwash rinses...Also you can do massaging with over the counter available gum paint.

u guys dnt have a natural method? by sister is 13 n she wants pink gums PLEASE HELP!

Unno, sometimes the black color of gingiva is due to plaque and calculus deposits. The best way to maintain gingival health is to do regular massaging after brushing, flossing and using mouthwash. Get your professional cleaning done by periodontist every six months. If your tooth adjoining black gums are sensitive than get an X-Ray done as their might be chances of caries resulting in blackening of gums.

Look up a place called "smile in the city" in NYC. I had my gum lazer surgery done there and I am a changed person. It does cost about $3000 though but it's worth it.

Just between the teeth where the gums make an upside down V shape, on the tip of the V, my gums have gone black in that one small section. It seems to have sunken in a bit too in comparison to the rest of my gums. It reminds me of a cavity but it's on my gums? Should I be worried at all about this? What can I do to get rid of it?
