Hi Ed, give the tooth sometime. You can wait for another 3-4 days as the pain is subsiding that means the tooth is healing. If after a week still the pain is there then you can schedule an appointment with your dentist.

Hi Janae, if it is hurting on chewing and the pain persists for hours after that then that means the tooth is infected and you have to go for Root Canal treatment for that tooth. So schedule an appointment with your dentist.

It looks like you have an infected tooth as the pain persist even after the stimulus is removed. If the pain is not increasing then you may wait for another 2 to 3 days but if it persists even after that then you have to go for the root canal treatment.

Initially after getting the braces the pain is there as the pressure is put on the teeth and it takes some time for the teeth to adjust. As you have more pain in one tooth ,it is possible that the particular tooth is out of position more than the others and that is why the pressure is more on that particular tooth. Avoid eating any thing hard from that side and maintain good oral hygiene. If the condition deteriorates then discuss with your orthodontist.

Hi! I had a filling done on Feb 28 and the dentist said it was a very deep filling. She said she put a medicated liner on it so hopefully they wouldn't have to do a root canal. It is now March 4, so it's been a few days and it hurts when I chew, and then it hurts for hours after. It's not a very strong pain, but it still hurts. It doesn't have pain to hot foods or cold foods, it just hurts when I eat or drink anything, and then the pain persists for hours after.

No, it is not normal. It means that the tooth is infected and needs the root canal treatment. So go to the dentist and get the X-ray done and find out about the infection. If it is really infected then you have to get the root canal treatment followed by the dental crown.

Hello Dr. Ritz,
One week ago my dentist repaired my tooth ( half of it was broken off) by filling it with white filling. I have been having dull/gnawing pain in my gums and sensitivity on the side of my face. I have never tried to eat on that side. Could you tell me if this is normal?
Thank you.

Hi BETTY,A common cause of persistent toothache after filling is that tooth decay bacteria may have reached the pulp chamber and infected it.This could happen if the dentist does not remove successfully all the decayed tissue before filling the tooth allowing the decay to continue to destroy the tooth under the filling. The toothache is usually constant, especially when eating.Another possibility is that the decay was too close to the pulp and some bacteria had already managed to reach the pulp through the porous dentine but had not given symptoms of tooth infection until the tooth was filled.Whatever the cause of the tooth infection,a root canal is necessary to save the tooth and relieve this type of tooth pain after filling.Request your dentist to take an x-ray of the involved tooth to find out whether the infection has reached the pulp or not.Hope that helps.Good luck!!

I took my daughter into the dentist for a routine checkup and was told she needs fillings. She was not in any type of pain. The dentist put in three white fillings and left her mouth dry with grit that she had to spit out. A few days later my daughter complained to me about her teeth hurting but he was holding her jawbone. I called the dentist and we went in for a second visit. During this visit they drilled some more on her teeth and told her to take some ibupro. The pain persisted and so i took her back again. They said they could not see anything wrong. I went to another dentist who did not want to be involved in the situation and told us to get some sensitive toothpaste. That works for a while but if she use any other kind of toothpaste the pain returns. What can I do! my daughter is only 17 and now she may be facing loosing a couple of her back teeth!

Dear KAREN, It seems that your filling is bit high that might be impinging on the crown on the opposite tooth. I would advise you to schedule a visit to dental office and for safety reasons get an Xray before the treatment.

I have 2 fillings on the upper right side of my mouth the two teeth right in front of the molar. They don't hurt when I eat, but the tooth right below them, which has a crown and a root canal which was done over a year ago is the tooth that hurts when I eat. It is throbbing. The fillings were done 6 days ago. Why would my bottom tooth be hurting so bad?

Dear ANN, There are many reasons for pain. It can be due to deep carious excavation that might have disturbed the nerves. If it is so then it will take around 3 or 4 days to alleviate the pain. Another reason for pain is overfilling done that is impinging on the gingiva and thus causing the trouble. Last cause might be high filling due to which the pain is there while biting on that tooth. So, to rule out with the correct diagnosis you require a clinical examination and an Xray.

Dear Dr, I went into my dentist office because I was having pain in one of my teeth. The Dentist did a few X-Rays and said that there was nothing wrong with the teeth I was complaining about but noted that a previously filled cavity seemed to have grown and needed redone. She said that this cavity could be the one causing the pain through "Transference". I went back the following day to have the cavity filled with white filling. She filled 2 parts of the tooth. The top which was an old filling she was redoing and a new cavity on the side. This tooth is the last molar on the bottom right side that she was working on. It has been 3 days now since the fillings and the tooth hurts really bad. It hurts SOMETIMES when I bite down on it but mostly the pain will just come and go. It doesn't hurt consistently sometimes it will just stop hurting for a little bit but when it does start hurting it is one of the worst pains I have ever felt. Most the time it is a sharp solid pain (no throbbing). Also, my jaw hurts now on the side (I am guessing it is the area where the numbing shots where done). It hurts to open my jaw wide now also. The jaw pain is consistent and will only subside when I take ibuprofen. Is it normal for the tooth to be hurting this much? If it is normal, how long will it take for this pain to just go away? For my jaw, should I be concerned about this or could she just have maybe hit a bone with the numbing shot and it will heal in time? Please offer me some insight I feel like I am drowning in tooth pain right now.

Dear JESS, Pain can be due to overfilling. I would recommend you to visit a dentist and get the bite checked. After getting the bite corrected make sure not to eat anything solid from that side for at least a week as the pain will take this much time to go. Also get an Xray of lower tooth to know the root cause behind pain and sensation.

Dear JESS, Can you tell us when you had the filling done as the symptoms are common during intial couple of days of dental filling but if you had filling quite a long back then there are two reasons for this: Either your filling is too high that is causing the pain Or the filling material is not properly seated due to which there is microleakage going. I would suggest you to use anti-sensitive dental cream and brush properly. If the problem still persist then visit a dentist and get yourself clinically checked.

Dear DIANE, Pain after getting 14 fillings is normal. The reason behind pain is the trauma the teeth underwent due to drilling and instrumentation. Don't worry the pain will subside gradually. Take care not to eat on solid stuff and maintain a good oral hygiene by brushing twice, flossing and doing mouthwash gargles.

Dear LARRY, Firstly welcome again to Identalhub. Hope you are satisfied by the resolution given to you by our dentists. Now coming to your problem, see its generally quite difficult to judge during multiple fillings (as in your case) that white tooth filling is causing the pain. So, its a sort of "odd one out" for dentist. s/he will slightly reduce all the fillings. And trust me pain due to high filling will not go immediately, it will take a week of time.

Greetings again Dr. Ritz, thanks for the info I saw the dentist yesterday and he adjusted my bite (for the 2nd) time and said my pain is most likely due to the bite. Unfortunately, I will have to return for a 3rd time to have the bite adjusted. Makes me really frustrated to have to return a third time especially for the tooth I claimed to be causing the problem yet they never adjusted. They instead adjusted the other two teeth which were filled. Do you see this often were patients return several times for a bite adjustments? I just don't want to seem like a jerk to the dentists.

Dear LARRY, If the pain is due to high filling then it will take some days to subside. You need to massage the area and avoid eating anything solid from that side. Other causes of pain are: White composite fillings slightly change their shape once they solidify. So, if dentist hasn't placed the filling properly then change in shape after filling can lead to internal pressure and thus pain. Micro leakage is also common reason behind pain after filling.
