It is not advisable to have braces after implants as it can cause the failure of implants because of the pressure on the teeth which are implanted. But in your case as the implants are in the back, so you can discuss this option with your Orthodontist. If you just want to move the front teeth and if it is possible without putting pressure on the implanted teeth, then you can go for braces. However you have to visit your Orthodontist to discuss the options and it is better that you go for fixed retainers after getting braces treatment so that the teeth donot shift afterwards. However exact thing can be told only after clinical examination of the case. I was savaged by a dog when I was young resulting 90 stiches to my face my back jaw was pushed in. I am currently undergoing reconstruction.
I have just recently had dental implants on my top back teeth second from the back they were in 3 months I now have braces. With temporary crowns that are smaller than all the teeth so there is no pressure. The Implants were place in the correct position for the finished result. So no pressure is being applied to these implants at all. I have four specialists looking after me. The braces have now been on 7 months with no problems. The specialist all communicate and have meetings about the procedures, I am having. The do cone cat scans and share these over coffee. If you have the right professional looking after you then there should be no problem. It is not a cheap exercise. I have a Prosthodontist He is my Forman or architect he is in charge of everything, Orthodontist, Periodontist, and an ENT. When it comes to this amount of work don’t look for the cheapest alternative, One person is not qualified to do the whole lot each individual is qualified in their own field. Don’t go to someone who says they can do the whole job. The cost of this is approximately $45,000 by the way I am paying for this had to mortgage my house. My parents never sued the dog owners.

It is really bad to read your situation. Must be very traumatic. I think you must in best of hands. You have to undergo all these treatments. The cosmetic treatments take really long and go on till you are fully grown and have to undergo multiple sessions. You are right that it is not job of one doctor. Every doctor is specialist in his own fied and in my optinion you are following right path. The cosmetic and reconstruction treatments in every field of medicine, dentistry are costly and needs expert experience to execute. I wish you good luck.

Thank you Dr Ritz, I have a great fear of big Dogs it’s a long process, It is a difficult journey for me and a long process, But I look at it this way I am in my 40s now and will eventually have the face I was born with and look the way I was supposed to have. Don’t get me wrong people didn’t notice the damage, I hide it well. I have managed to be a professional singer and entertainer all my life. One thing that I have noticed is my vocal voice has changed for the better; I lost my voice completely for about two months two weeks after the braces went on, that was scary. I had to undergo retraining with a speech therapist. It’s funny how your body can adjust to abnormal functions. I guess my body just got up one morning and said I don’t want to play when so much change takes place in such a short time with braces. I will keep you posted as the progress continues.

I had a horrible accident and needed two front top implants and a crown on the front bottom. I have seen the Lumineers commercials and was wondering if I were to be able to get them. As my dentist did advice me that Braces was a no go. Prior to my accident I had straight teeth. Can you please advice me? Thank you

If you have front teeth implants then there can be no braces as the implants are embedded in the bone and cannot be moved and if tried can lead failure of implant. Further on top of implant, a crown is given for which you can choose tooth shade and if not satisfied you can change them. There is no need for lumineers for these. For other front teeth you can go for lumineers.

I recently had a molar with a fractured cusp prepared for an all-zirconia crown. After the prep, my tooth began hurting when I chewed crunchy foods. The dentist says the tooth must still be fractured and is sending me to an endodontist for a root canal. This tooth had never had any fillings or decay. He said there is a slight chance the tooth is cracked so badly that it may need to be extracted.
Before all this, we were talking about doing Invisalign on my bottom teeth. I have five cracked teeth, all molars and pre-molars, so I have four more crowns to go. I had braces when I was a kid, and my top teeth look okay, except for slightly noticible incisal wear. My bottom teeth are definitely overlapping, but the problems are not hugely noticible. My main motive for considering orthodontics is not cosmetic. The dentist thinks the Invisalign will help prevent me from getting more fractured teeth by fixing the problems with my occlusion that are causing me to grind my teeth.
So, what happens if I go to the endo, he starts the root canal, finds out the tooth is broken all the way through, and has to extract the molar and put in an implant? Does this mean I can not fix the problems with my front teeth?
I am only 30, in good health, only two cavities in my life. I feel so frustrated because everyone is telling me there isn't anything I can do to save my teeth from all this. :(

Lily, If there are cracked teeth in mouth, it doesn’t necessarily means that the tooth needs to be extracted and needs to be replaced with implants. If the fracture line is vertical or there is cervical root fracture, then only the teeth are removed. Otherwise root canal treatment along with capping can be given to the patient to repair cracked tooth. Cracked tooth can be because of big filling in the mouth or can be because of trauma or can be because of bruxism that is teeth grinding. Bruxism can be because of anxiety, malocclusion of teeth and if it is because of malocclusion, then you need to get it corrected. Braces treatment is not mostly given on the implants. You can discuss this with your orthodontist. If the implants are needed in the back teeth, then the front teeth can be moved and can be corrected.

All my premolars are implants and I have one canine tooth up in my gumline a bit that I wanted brought down so I don't have to keep getting bonding done. I'm wondering if braces would be an option for me?

Lindsay, You can’t have braces after dental implants as it can cause pressure on the implanted teeth and can cause failure of implants. Apart from bonding and braces, you can get lumineers or veneers or crowns to correct the alignment of your canine. Veneers are further of 2 types, ceramic and composite ones. You can opt for any of them. You can discuss about these options with your dentist.
