Gums growing over wisdom tooth

By Eric 11/16/2011 11:43:30 PM
I can no longer bear to bite down with my back teeth, discouraging me to eat. From the back the tooth, my gums in the back of my mouth are beginning to grow over my bottom right wisdom tooth (I am 18, and due to have my wisdom teeth cut out; I'm in college and refuse to make time to have them removed). If I even touch this part of my gums slightly, I will feel a painful sensation for several seconds immediately after. The entire region surrounding this tooth is in excruciating pain. What can I do to fix this?

Your wisdom tooth must be partially erupted and soft tissue must be surrounding the wisdom tooth. This condition is called as Pericoronitis. It occurs mostly in relation to lower wisdom tooth and in this condition; gums which are surrounding the partially impacted wisdom tooth will appear swollen and inflamed. It is extremely painful and tender and pain may also be radiating to ear and throat. Pus may also discharge from this. Swelling in cheeks, bad odor and taste in mouth can also occur in Pericoronitis. Fever, swelling of lymph nodes may also occur if Pericoronitis is severe. You have to visit your dentist to get treatment done for this condition. Dentist will debride the area and will clean the area after raising the flap. In case of acute infection, antibiotics are also prescribed to the patient. It will regress in 5-7 days. If it recurs again, then operculectomy that is surgical removal of flap which is covering the partially impacted wisdom tooth is done. If it recurs again and again, then wisdom tooth extraction will be required. By the time you visit your dentist, keep wisdom tooth area clean to avoid any food deposits in back of jaw which will aggravate the pain. Take more of fluids and do warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day to reduce swelling which is present around wisdom tooth.
