Headache and pain after dental crown placement

By Y 11/4/2011 3:19:19 AM
A week ago I had a crown put on a tooth on the right side of my lower jaw. Since then I have frequently been experiencing light pain in my lower jaw and severe headaches above my right temple and behind my ear. Is this normal?

Pain and discomfort may occur for 2-3 days after dental crown placement which usually regresses later on. If there is pain present along with headache and earache, then it can be because of some high point on dental crown or can occur because of infection in the tooth with dental crown. Pain might be because of impacted wisdom tooth eruption and not because of dental crown. Impacted wisdom tooth causes severe pain which may be radiating to ears and jaws. During dental treatment, mouth is kept open for quite a long time which can cause TMJ problem and headache. Headache can also be because of this reason.  You can visit your dentist to get your tooth evaluated. If there is some high point on dental crown, then selective grinding can be done. Dentist may take an x-ray to see whether there is any infection in the tooth with dental crown or not. If there is infection in the tooth with dental crown, then treatment will be required to remove the infection. If pain is because of eruption of impacted wisdom tooth, then extraction of wisdom tooth is required.  For the time being, you can take some pain meds available otc for pain relief and can do warm saline rinses to reduce swelling which may be present around tooth with dental crown. Use an Interdental brush in area of dental crown to remove any deposits around dental crown and avoid eating from that side of the tooth.  For more info on problems after crown placement, you can refer to…   http://www.identalhub.com/article_problems-after-crown-placement-272.aspx
