Pain and jaw swelling after root canal treatment

My husband had a absessed tooth and was put on antibiotics 2x before it was under control. He then had a root canal and we paid $1200 because we have no insurance. this was back in mid July. The tooth has continued to bother him but not be painful. HE just thought it took a long time to heal. this week it is painful and his jaw is swollen. He called the dentist back and told him he wanted to see a specialist and he wanted the dentist to pay for it. the dentist said fine but he wanted to see him first. He went in and the dentist did an xray and said there was nothing wrong with the root canal he had an infection under his tooth. He prescribed antibiotics and antibacterial meds. When looking at the xray my husband noticed the dentist drilled or filled too far and went outside the tooth in two places. One on the side and once on the bottom. We do not trust this dentist and would like to know if this is a problem or it will all go away if he takes these meds?

Pain in the tooth can be because of over filling of the canals or can be because of perforation of canals during root canal procedure or can be because of infection still left in root canal treated tooth. Overfilling of canals may cause development of fistula on gum adjacent to tooth and cause infection. Only taking antibiotics and pain meds may not solve the problem. If there is infection still left in the tooth, then re-root canal treatment may be required for tooth or your husband may have to go for apicoectomy.  Without clinical examination, it is difficult to give definite diagnosis. You can refer to an endodontist who is specialist in root canal treatment for a second opinion. For the time being, for some pain relief, you can avoid eating from that side of the tooth and take the meds as prescribed by your dentist. If there is gum swelling present in that area, then you can do warm saline rinses for some relief.
