Pain and swelling after root canal treatment

By S 1/15/2011 11:03:54 AM
I had a root canal 3 days ago. The day after I was in intense pain. Yesterday the pain was not nearly as bad but my face on the side of the root canal was all swollen. I called my dentist and he put me on amoxicillian. My face is still swollen today. However, can I workout today?

It is norma to have pain  after root canal treatment and some times there is swelling also. It s there when singlre sitting root canal is done. It takes around a week  for the tooth to settle down. but if your dentist has prescribed the medication you should take that properly. Amoxycillin normally starts showing its effect after three days. So do not panick. It is better to take a day or two in a easy manner and do not do very vigrous work out. i had root canal surgery 4 days ago. the dentist did the whole procedure in one sitting. i had severe pain and my face swelled. he then advised by telephone to take amoxycillen 250g 4 times daily. by the next day my face was worse and he then said to double the dose which i did. my face is still swollen, particularly under my eye, and i have lots of pain. it is now bank holiday so i can't go back to see him, which frankly i feel very reluctant to do. i know i must because he will then fit the crown. has anyone else had this problem. and when can i start to feel better. also will the swelling go down, as the tooth was not left to drain and i don't see how the abcess will clear. please advise.

BARBARA, I would recommend you to visit the dentist and get the whole thing manually checked. There are chances that the infection is still inside the root canals, that might have left to swelling and pain. It can only be confirmed after taking an Xray. Till that time follow the course of treatment and apply a towel dipped in warm water over the area. This will provide you with temporary relief...For more info on complications after RCT you can visit the following link...http://www.identalhub.com/dental-pain-after-root-canal--914.aspx
