Piece of tooth left after wisdom tooth extraction

I just had my lower right wisdom tooth (which was fully grown in)removed three days ago. I thought all was fine, but today I started feeling a rugged scratching on my tongue constantly. So I looked and there is what looks like a piece of tooth left from the extraction! It is on the inner lower side of the gum so that it is scratching against and hurting the side of my tongue. It does not feel loose. Maybe a tiny bit, but I didn't mess with it a lot because I don't want to irritate the incision hole. FIrst of all, is this normal?? Second, would it be ok to try and pull it out myself with tweezers or something? Or can it just be left in? Please help!

The whole of the tooth should be pulled out.  If a part of tooth remains in the socket after extraction, it can cause infection later on so that portion of the tooth should also be removed.  If the size of the fragment is less than 0.5mm,  than it can be left in the socket. It will resorb on its own but if the size of the fragment is more than 0.5mm than  it has to be pulled out. Don’t eat anything from the extraction side so that there is no food accumulation in that area. Do warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day and visit your dentist for it. Don’t pull out the tooth yourself. That part of the tooth might be firmly attached to the bone.  You may irritate the socket if you do it yourself. The sharpness can also be there because of sharp bony edge in that area. In that case, the edge of the bone which is sharp is smoothened with an instrument. Your dentist will take a radiograph and will see whether the sharp portion is tooth or bone. If it is a tooth fragment, then he will pull that out and if it is a sharp bony edge, then he will smoothen it. Just had a wisdom tooth extracted by an oral surgeon on last friday 9-2. Have the exact same thing. Chunk of tooth or bone sticking out of the gum, and irritating the side of my tongue. Didn't have general anesthesia, and am not fond of the thought of going back. surgeon had a time with the tooth, and said he took it out in 30 pieces. Apparently #31 was hiding.
