There are 3 types of dental crowns, all porcelain dental crowns, porcelain fused to metal dental crowns and metallic dental crowns. Porcelain dental crowns are most esthetic and are given for front teeth. Porcelain fused to metal dental crowns (PFM) are crown porcelain fused high noble metal and are tooth colored but not as esthetic as porcelain dental crowns and can be given for front and back teeth. All metal dental crowns have high strength but look unaesthetic so they are given for back teeth. In Crown porcelain fused high noble metal crowns, porcelain is fused on surface of metal and by this, the brittleness of full porcelain dental crowns is overcome and esthetics are not compromised either as porcelain on the metal surface provides good color matching. Porcelain fused to metal dental crowns are less expensive as compared to all ceramic dental crowns which are zirconia based. Noble metal which is used in PFM dental crowns is silvery grayish in color and is inert and non-reactive. Life span of porcelain fused to metal dental crowns is 10-15 years.
