Third tooth upper right

Broke crowned tooth at the gum line. My dentist (?) told me that I would need root canal and new crown. I am told price is $2,000. I had decided to just leave it alone. However, some of the root has crumbled away and I am wondering what this means for the future. I am 75 years old, work full time at a small job, on Social Security, have no dental insurance, and, while my dentist was a professor at Loyola University dental school and can do anything, has no sliding scale for people without insurance. On 09/02/08, I had a double bypass and an aortic valve replacement, and am diabetic.
What will happen if I just let this situation go?

You have to either get the treatment done or get it pulled out as this is a source of infection and it can have adverse effect on heart surgery. If you get it pulled out the you have go for the replacement which will be fixed bridge or dental implant. The cost of this will be around $2500-3000.It is better to go for Root Canal treatment and crown rather than gettting it pulled out. If you do not have insurance then for cheaper treatment you can try dental school near your home where the treatment is done at low rate or sometimes free also. Thank you for your kindness in answering my question so promptly. I can see that the only choice is treatment. As far as implants are concerned, my husband has had two and, after a few years, they failed. I do not believe it was an inherent problem with the implant but the condition of gums, etc. The price of an implant is even more prohibitive than the root canal/crown option.
As far as dental school treatment is concerned, the only one I knew about was the Loyola University school in Maywood, Illinois. However, that prestigious school, which educated most of the dentists in the greater Chicago area is concerned, is now closed. Someone told me about the University of Illinois but I may not be destitute enough to receive services there.
Yours is a great service and I appreciate your timely and kind answer. I will research this a little more and then proceed somehow. My thought is to have the extraction and let it heal without any further adieu. Financially, that might be the best choice. As far as the gaping hole, well, at 75 years of age, married for 53 years to a wonderful gentleman, I can live with it. I smile all day long and I am not going to quit now.
