Tongue swelling after all teeth removed

By deanna 1/31/2012 1:08:37 AM
I had all my teeth taken out while asleep 4 days ago. My tongue was swollen last night and today was ok now it is swollen again very thick feeling and it is sore and has a little bit of white on it. I am having trouble sitting up more than 5 minutes really dizzy. The only medicine I took was Advil. I did not need the prescription pain meds. He didn't give me an antibiotic. He said the infection would drain once all the gums were cut. Please advise me cause this swollen tongue is scary.

Swelling of tongue after multiple teeth extraction can be there because of surgical trauma to the tongue during tooth extraction. Some swelling of tongue can also occur because of infection on tongue. If there is no objective swelling present and you feel heaviness or swelling of tongue, then it can be because of lingual nerve damage during teeth extraction. Nerve can get bruised or squashed during extraction and can cause temporary numbness and feeling of heaviness of tongue. If swelling is because of trauma to the tongue, then swelling will regress in some time. Keep tongue clean to avoid any infection of the tongue. Dizziness can occur because of medicines or can be result of multiple teeth extraction and less of food intake. Take nutritious soft foods. For faster healing of extraction socket, you can continue with warm saline rinses. You can get your missing teeth replaced with Dentures, implants or implant supported dentures.  For more info on complications after tooth extraction visit……   http://www.identalhub.com/dental-complications-after-tooth-extraction-881.aspx

Just curious how long will the swollen tongue thing last? It went away yesterday but came back again today. It is heavy and hard to swallow a bit cause I feel the thick and heaviness. I went to the Oral Surgeon and he said it doesn't look big. But I feel it. Never felt this before. It has been 9 days since the surgery now.

Normally during tooth extraction when the numbing shot is given the tongue feels heavy and swollen but it is not exactly heavy and swollen but it is due to numbness as the nerve supplying to the tongue is also numb. This feeling of heavyness and swoollen tongue goes when the numbing effect goes. In your case it may be due to infection in the extraction socket that you are having feeling of heavyness and swelling in the tonugue. You can discuss this with your dentist.

Healing nicely now but now my right jaw pops when I open my mouth up. It was not doing this before he removed all my teeth (23 of them) is it normal for the jaw to pop after being put under to take out so many teeth?
