Wisdom teeth extraction and IV needle

By Tracy 1/31/2012 12:58:36 AM
I went to the dentist today and they told me I should get my wisdom teeth removed. I found an oral surgeon and I'm going to set up an appointment. I'm scared about getting the IV before I get my wisdom teeth removed. Can they put some numbing cream on my arm?

Wisdom teeth are last teeth to come and usually erupt in late teens. If wisdom teeth are impacted, infected or are causing any other problem, then they are pulled out. It is difficult to clean till the wisdom tooth and wisdom teeth are susceptible to infections, so they are mostly removed. Wisdom teeth don’t aid in mastication so if they are infected, then they are pulled out. Wisdom tooth extraction can be done under local anesthesia and IV sedation. Procedure can also be done under general anesthesia or laughing gas. Sedation and anti-anxiety medications contained in IV will not make you feel anything during procedure. IV sedation will make the whole experience of tooth extraction better and more comfortable. You will just feel a needle prick. There is no numbing cream for arm. If you are very apprehensive about procedure, then your dentist/oral surgeon may prescribe you anti-anxiety med before procedure to calm you. If tooth is impacted, then tooth is removed with surgical tooth extraction in which cut is given on gums and tooth is removed after tooth sectioning and or bone cutting. After extraction, you will be given some instructions by your dentist which you have to follow. You will be fine in few days to weeks after wisdom teeth extraction.
