Wisdom Tooth extraction and Hearing Loss

By Anony 3/7/2011 6:29:26 PM
I had my wisdom teeth pulled (all 4) 4 years ago. A few weeks afer I had them pulled I lost my hearing in my left side. I've been to various doctors who claim that nothing is wrong with me, that it was just something that happened. After painstaking research, I ran accross a forum that stated some people lost their hearing after having their teeth extracted. I was wondering how a dentist would find this out? Maybe a nerve was pinched? Tooth remenants caused infection etc? Any help would be appreciative.

It is not possible to have hearing loss after wisdom tooth extraction because there is no relationship betwee tooth and ear. Any infection in wisdom tooth area cannot be transmitted to ear. If there is tooth ache then referred pain can be in the ear or the temple region but hearing loss is unheard after tooth extraction. If nerve is pinched or damaged during pullout then it has regeneration capacity and there can be numbness but not hearing loss and that also is not permanent loss. I have to disagree with you Dr. Ritz I recently jsut had my second wisdom tooth on the bottom removed. This is the second time i am suffering from hearing loss after having them removed. its not permenant its lasted about 2mths last time and its just starting now. so wether it be from pressure or whatever its for sure related to having them removed

I agree with Shelby. My daughter just had all four wisdom teeth removed and suffered thru the weekend with two lower dry sockets along with an very swollen ear as a result of this surgery. The Dr. insisted it had nothing to do with the surgery. I took her to our family Dr. who said yes this was a direct cause of the surgery. Then she went on to say there was nothing she can do because the only treatment would be steroids to stop the swelling. She reframed from doing so because of the complications of infection. So we are riding it out with Aleve. You can have permanent loss and not know it. Check this out, Bilateral Idiopathic Sensorineural hearing loss following dental surgery.

I am so glad that i found this post about hearing loss. I had my tooth pulled on the bottom and lost most of my hearing in one ear about 1-2 weeks afterwards. I have been trying antibiotics but don't think this is going to cure the loss of hearing. I too believe the loss is related to the pulled tooth.

I have just had a tooth extracted 4 days ago and experienced acute hearing loss in both ears as the anaesthetic was wearing off.My doctor has prescribed steroids. The hearing in my right ear has started to become clearer-less noise but the left ear nothing! This is related, not to the extraction but, to the injections and appears to be more common than first thought.

I"m currently looking for insight. I had a tooth extracted on Friday 9/23 and Sunday i awoke to pressure in my ears. As of yesterday 9/27 i have decreased hearing, buzzing, ringing and garbled speech/vibrating in my left ear. CAnt get an appt until 10/4 and i'm concerned things could get worst by then!

JNoble, Decreased hearing after wisdom tooth extraction can be because of referred pain or can be because of swelling after wisdom tooth extraction which can cause pressure on ears. The condition usually regresses in few days or weeks. To reduce the swelling, you can do warm saline rinses and can apply pressure dressing. Most of the times, pressure on ears is temporary and will correct in few days. You can also consult an ENT specialist for this. By that time, follow the instructions of your oral surgeon and take the pain meds as prescribed by your dentist. Keep the extraction socket area clean to avoid secondary infections.

I too pulled all 4 wisdoms out at once. They were not bothering me but my dentist suggested that it would be a good idea to do so because they tend to get infected. I also remember an infection after they were pulled. I was given antibiotics to clear it up. 4yrs later, I experienced a bilateral hearing loss which left me completely deaf. I cannot follow conversation even with hearing aids. Doctors and dentists I've seen do not feel that the cause of my hearing loss was due to my wisdoms being pulled. Thank you Shelby for putting a name to my condition. I will research it further.

I had upper wisdom teeth removed. Next morning I had total hearing loss in right ear and extreme vertigo and sickness. Vertigo subsided. Hearing never returned. ENT says hearing loss is permanent and not related to surgery. I disagree. What an incredible coincident.

My daughter had wisdom teeth removal Feb2009. She experienced TMJ - joint derangement for which we saw numerous therapists that I paid for. By October 2009, she had lost hearing on right side. My daughter sang for the junior choir of Vancouver Chamber Choir (a notable choir in the world- Pacifica). We finally have an apt in June2012 to see a specialist. My daughter has had numerous hearing & voice since she was 12. There is an appalling lack of concern and responsibility from the medical communities to address issues.

I had oral surgery less than 2 months ago for the removal of a cracked root canal tooth. A bone graft was also applied at the same time. Following that, the pain and swelling did not diminish as expected and increased doses of antibiotic did not help. I finally went to another oral surgeon who opened it up, cleaned out the infection, and gave effective antibiotics. However, during that time, my hearing closed off, and only gradually after the second surgeon cleaned up the surgery, did hearing come back, but not all the way. I have lost all my high frequencies, now have tinnitus, and hyperacusis. My physician referred me to an otologist and an audiogram confirms hearing loss. I have started taking hydrochlorothiazide to dry up any lingering fluids in my inner ear (an electrocochliogram showed normal, at the time of the test.) Also, taking Namenda, which is an Alzheimer’s medication which might be effective in reducing or elimination tinnitus. I am devastated and depressed. I can’t listen to music. SSS sounds in speech are almost painfully loud. The otologist can give me no answer on my prognosis. Should I ask for the steroids mentioned in earlier posts?

Cycler, Sometimes during infection the hearing can be affected as one of the canals called eustachian tube which opens in the mouth can get infected and cause the problem in hearing. So first take care of the infection and when this infection settles down and healing is there, the hearing can also come back.
