This is the first case to have come up with the General Dental Council known as the GDC and is the dental regulator in the UK, about the performance of tooth whitening products and the impact that they have on the patients. They have been used in the practice of dentistry since a long time.
The surprising thing is that dentists have pleaded guilty of practicing dentistry without being registered to do so. This was the latest case in the City of Westminster Magistrates Court where Paul William Hill of Warrington aged 48 pleaded guilty to 4 offences and one of it was practicing dentistry while not registered as a dentist. Under the Dentists Act 1984, it is an offence to practice dentistry without the requisite.
Mr Hill has been ordered to pay a total of £6,265 in fines and costs. The company that he represents that is PW Healthcare Consulting Limited has been ordered to pay a total of £6,765. The amounts include costs of £5,500 for the GDC. The shares were even traded on the stock exchange.
This case came up when patients complained in hundreds about the tooth whitening treatment that they had received by professionals who claimed to be so but had no registration.
The GDC which is the watch dog of all dental professionals in the UK began criminal proceedings under the Dentists Act 1984 on the grounds. The cases main thing was that tooth whitening can only be lawfully provided by those who are registered dental professionals. There have been charges against other people and companies that have started coming up as well.
Chief Executive and Registrar of the GDC, Evlynne Gilvarry said:
"This kind of case is going to have far-reaching implications on the dental profession. This will go on to protect the general public. This will remove any kind of illegal practices from the dental profession. Also, dentists will not be tempted to try out harmful and hazardous treatments on their patients. They will obviously have the right registrations, qualifications and training before they start practicing dentistry.
