Before starting with the root canal treatment, careful case selection is very important. For that dentist take the detailed history, do clinical examination and take the x-rays. After the diagnosis is made and the tooth is selected for root canal treatment the procedure is started
First of all the area is made numb by giving the local anesthesia. After that the dentist isolates the tooth so that the area remains dry and is not infected during the procedure. For that rubber dam is applied which a thin rubber sheet and is held by the clamps. After the area is made numb and is isolated by rubber dam the dentists removes the decayed part using the drill and make a approach cavity for the pulp chamber and the canal. This is called making the access cavity.
After the access is obtained special instruments called the endodontic file is used to clean and shape the canals. The length to which this file should go is determined and measured from the x-ray.After cleaning and shaping of the canals a special filling material called gutta percha is filled in the canals. It should be filled in such a way that no space is left and there are no chances of infection afterwards.
Gutta percha filling is done in the canals. The pulp chamber is filled with the permanent filling material likecomposite or the silver amalgam. After completing the root canal treatment the tooth should be crowned because the tooth becomes brittle after the root canal treatment and is more prone to fracture.
Mostly the patient’s are afraid of getting the root canal treatment as it is considered to be painful. But this is not the case as the root canal treatment is done under local anasthesia and there is no pain when once the area is numb. The procedure is long as the dentist has to do the access opening, then cleaning and shaping of canal and then the canals has to be filled. Post operative pain can be there as it takes time for the tissue to heall but that canbe taken care by taking the pain killersprescribed by the dentist. So we say that the root canal treatment is a safe and very commonly performed procedure. If a particular tooth can be saved by the root canal treatment then one should undergo the treatment. It s always etter to save the tooth than to extract it.
