Dental insurance as the name suggests is the insurance coverage offered by various health insurance companies that one gets against paying premium depending upon the type of coverage.  The premium amount varies from company to company and also depends upon the age of the insured, his dental condition, any pre existing  conditions (dental problems), maximum amount of coverage, type of dental insurance coverage i.e. basic dental costs meant for preventing dental problems  or  the dental cost associated with basic dental care and procedures (that may or may not include root canal therapy) or the cost associated with major dental treatments, off course not including the cosmetic  / smile makeover dental procedures.

Of late the insurance companies have started discouraging dental insurance coverage especially to individuals realizing the fact that they end up being net payers of insurance claims instead of earning out of dental insurance plans. Even a number of dental practices have also started discouraging cases involving dental insurance coverage in view of lengthy and cumbersome claim settling procedures of insurance companies which involves a lot of paperwork and sometimes the insurance companies pay only a percentage of cost / fixed cost for many dental procedures in which case either the dentist has to charge the differential from the patient or in most cases the dentists prefer to take full payment from the patient and let the insured fill and follow the claim. In the later case the insured tries to look for an alternative.

Dental Plan or to say dental discount plan also known as dental insurance alternative is the in thing today. There are various companies in the market who sell dental plans with different USPs. The mode operandi of most of these dental plan selling companies is more or less similar wherein they have made tie ups with various dental practices all over the country for offering special discounts to their plan holders / members and in return these dental practices get enlisted with these companies and hence get business from the plan holders through these companies. These discounts range from 10% to 60% depending upon the type of plan one holds and the type of dental procedure involved.  The plan holder upon visiting the dentist needs to show his membership card and the dentist deducts the agreed discount from the fee bill of the plan holder thus making the dental plan holder pay the balance. The best part about these dental plans is that there is very little paperwork involved. One simply needs to fill in an application / enrollment form, which can even be done online for some companies, and pay the monthly / annual membership fee upon approval. No age bars, no pre existing conditions check up (mostly), no lengthy, cumbersome and time consuming claim filing procedures, no waiting time and some of the dental plans even cover discounts on cosmetic dental treatments as well.

In view of the ease and peace of mind involved and the reluctance of insurance companies, more and more people are preferring to join dental plans and the dental insurance coverage has started to be called a traditional insurance coverage.
