Viola! You have finally got your braces removed and what you see in the mirror are teeth that have been aligned in a straight row. You never imagined that your teeth could be this straight. But, you see some stains on your teeth and they don’t look as white as you would want them to.

So, what do you do now? Let us look at the various options that are available to you.

First of all get a cleaning of your teeth done at the dentist. This will remove all the accumulated tartar and plaque on your teeth and show them up a shade two whiter than before. If you want to have your teeth bleached wait for at least a month after the braces have been removed as the teeth can be in a weak state before that. When the dentist is removing the braces ensure that all the substance that allows it to stick on to your teeth is removed too. If this is not done properly then you will be left with stains.

You could ask your dentist for the Zoom whitening treatment. This is extremely popular and effective. It costs one about $350 but it is worth every dime spent on it as your teeth come out sparkling at you back from the mirror.

You might also want to consider laser treatment for the whitening of your teeth but it is extremely expensive.

There are Crest white Strips which you could try to give you white teeth. These strips are able to remove all the yellow and stains off your teeth and leave them the way you were born with.

There are also dentists who use whitening gels and trays. You will be given this tray to take home along with you and use it for two to three months. You will certainly notice a change in the color of your teeth.

After you have used these methods the best thing to adopt is diligence and consistency in your oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth regularly and try to reach for places that are unreachable. Floss your teeth and use a mouth wash as a rinse. Stains tend to build up over a period of time especially due to neglect. Once you don’t allow them to build up you will not need to necessarily worry about them.

Happy smiling!

  • Hi DEBBIE,Ask your dentist about the possible tooth whitening options after getting your braces removed.I would suggest a minimum of three to four weeks before you should use any type of strong whitening outside of toothpaste because if whitening is attempted before all of the glue comes off naturally, the potential for 'spots' or streaking on the teeth from uneven whitening increases.Hope that helps.Good luck!

  • Do the dentists give you the whitening gels and trays automatically when you get you braces off, or do you have to ask for them?
