Children usually tend to grind their teeth. This could be consciously or unconsciously. Usually, parents wonder how to stop their children from grinding their teeth whilst they are asleep. This is in fact a medical as well as a dental concern.  Grinding of teeth not only affects the teeth and jaws but all the other structures near it as well and actually, the entire head. Do not worry as there are ways in which you can stop teeth grinding in your child. Children and young adults who grind their teeth usually do so when they are asleep. Teeth grinding can be detrimental to one’s health and teeth too.

The Root Cause

In order to take action into stopping the grinding of teeth you must get to the root cause of it. Dentists say that people tend to grind teeth due to the stress and anxiety that they go through throughout the day. As a parent, it is quite upsetting and worrisome to see your child grinding their teeth.

Dental Check-Up

The first thing that you should do in this instance is to get your child checked by the dentist. This way, your dentist will be able to tell you if there is any major concern or whether your child will outgrow this habit when they get their permanent teeth. Once it has been made certain by your dentist that you certainly do grind your teeth then he will prescribe the cure that will suit you.

Stress and Anxiety

In case the dentist thinks that it is a direct relation to the stress that your child undergoes then he will ask you to consult a psychiatrist.

The dentist might also suggest stress management techniques by meditation or body relaxation and exercise.

Misalignment of Teeth

If the grinding of teeth occurs due to the misalignment of your teeth then the dentist will make a customized mouth guard or a splint for you. This will go on to protect your tooth and the enamel when you grind your teeth. There are mouth guards that are available over the counter too.

Dental Surgery

Your dentist might also suggest a dental surgery to overcome the problem of grinding your teeth at night. This includes the using of crowns and overlays on teeth to give them a new shape that is better for biting and chewing. These kinds of surgery will not be able to assure you that you will not grind your teeth in the future, but, it will stop any damage from occurring to your teeth. If your dentist finds out that your teeth have malocclusion that is the way they fit together is not correct then they would grind the teeth down to adjust your bite.

Positioning Strategies

This will include the correct positioning of your mouth and jaw as well as tongue position practice. These strategies will hold you in good stead.

There are certain medications that might trigger grinding of teeth. Keep an eye on this kind of trigger and let your dentist or doctor know of this.

Be certain not to medicate yourself but seek the advice of a dentist who will be able to:

  1. Pinpoint the right root cause and suggest the right solution
  2. Do not neglect teeth grinding as it can wear out the enamel and make your teeth sensitive.
  3. Lead to tooth decay and
  4. Will result in you spending a lot of money in expensive dental care.
  5.  Even the jaw can get damaged due to prolonged teeth grinding.

  • Sure stress might cause bruxism. I believe that a major cause is from sleeping on your side or stomach. Sleeping in these bad positions puts pressure on your relaxed jaw and misaligns it. Day time clenching and grinding is the result of nighttime bruxism as your jaw is attempting to realign itself. Make it a habit or sleeping on your back and see theses symptoms fade in short time.
