Dentures are the artificial set of teeth that replaces the natural teeth in the oral cavity. Though they are similar to natural teeth in shape, size and color but when it comes to comfort than the patient has to compromise. Reason being that with time dentures becomes loose and as a result may cause sore mouth and pain while chewing. When the patient or denture wearer bites, denture rubs against the oral cavity and this repeated activity causes pain and ulceration in the oral cavity.
So, let us first discuss why dentures are loose in 90% of its wearers. When natural teeth are removed, gums begin to shrink during first six weeks of extraction. So, if you are getting dentures placed within those six months, than they are bound to get loose with time and may make you uncomfortable. The only resolution is re-molding or re-lining of the old dentures but this is an expensive procedure and requires several frequent visits every year.
Though this product is yet to be approved but once done with the approval process it will really ease the pain and discomfort of denture wearers. Loose dentures are the problem of maximum of the denture wearers. The problems associated with loose dentures are:
1. Not able to chew food
2. Gagging i.e. not able to swallow food. This generally happens when the dentures are loose and continuously hit the palate or uvula.
4. Inability to socialize.
5. Speech difficulty: Due to lose fitting denture, tongue constantly hit against the dentures thereby making it difficult to speak.
Here are some of the points to prevent above listed problems especially pain after dentures:
1. Six months post extraction: The best time to get the dentures fitted is six months post extraction. This time is good enough for healing process to occur. Getting dentures within 6 months of time period can land you up in all the above listed problems. So, let the gums heal and after that only it is recommended to visit a prosthodontist. If somehow due to some reasons you have got the dentures and they are loose or making you uncomfortable than you require periodic adjustments or a tissue conditioner treatment or relining.
2. Mandibular dentures are more problematic than maxillary dentures: Due to the absence of retention areas like palate, mandibular or lower dentures do not get enough suction and hence are loose to wear. So, it’s important for the dentist to see if the teeth of lower dentures are evenly touching those of upper or maxillary teeth. Failing to do so can make them loose and cause sore mouth. Also, they should extend appropriately to the retro molar pad area. The arc of mandibular teeth should be perfect so as to prevent cheek biting.
3. Quick fix for loose dentures: Though quick fix is not recommended by many dentists but in case of mandibular region, where suction is hard to get, quick fix can be applied, but it should only be considered as a temporary method to overcome loose dentures.
4. Temporary dentures: Temporary or immediate dentures are the one that can be fitted immediately after extraction. But it is recommended that you shift to permanent dentures once six month post-extraction period is gone. Also, get yourself regularly checked while wearing immediate dentures.
5. Take off the dentures: As soon you start feeling pain with dentures, take them off and consult a dentist. Maintain good oral hygiene and regularly clean the area with clean cloth. Do warm saline gargles as it will keep away bacteria causing infection. Also clean the dentures and keep them in denture immersion solution overnight. Don’t forget to plan a visit to a dentist.
6. Eat soft food: For initial few day of denture wearing, eat soft non sticky foods and avoid biting on hard surfaces. Reason being, it can damage the soft and freshly healing gums. If you are a dessert lover you can have pudding, applesauce and gelatin.
7. Home Remedies:
A. Mouth rinsing: As discussed above, warm saline gargles are the best home remedy. Salt, owing to its antibacterial property, kills the bacteria and hence fights against the infection. Also, it helps in draining the abscess that is formed due to dentures.
B. Aloe vera gel: Place aloe vera gel in the sore area of mouth and avoid drinking or eating anything for at least an hour. This procedure will provide immediate relief from pain after dentures and soreness.
C. Avoid continuous wearing of dentures: If you are a new denture wearer, than avoid placing them continuously for too long periods. Gradually increase the time you are wearing them. Give your gums adequate time to get used to the new set of artificial teeth. Keep one fixed time to take them off, for e.g. taking them off before going to bed. Also, while taking them off place them in a denture solution.
D. Denture cleaning: Clean the dentures with denture cleaning agents and not with regular dental creams as certain ingredients of dental cream can be abrasive for dentures and can make the surface irregular. If you don’t have denture cleaner than plain herbal soap, warm water and brush acts as an excellent home denture cleaner. Clean your denture twice daily.
To cut the long story short here are the few points to prevent pain after dentures and keep your dentures healthy:
1. Keep a gap of 6 months between teeth extraction and denture placement.
2. Get the relining process done every two to three years.
3. Visit your prosthodontist regularly.
4. Remove your dentures at night. This gives time for the gums to relax.
5. Get your dentures changes after 5-6 years, if they are getting lose or uncomfortable.
6. Remove them immediately and fix an appointment if you develop an ulcer or pain. Donot try to adjust.
