My 2 year old went to the dentist yesterday, he wants to do a frenectomy on his front upper gums/lip. He said most kids can wait until kindergarten but wants to my son to have it done sooner rather then later......why put a 2 year old thru this?

  • Just retract the upper lip. You will notice a piece of skin that connects lip to bottom of gingiva (vestibule). Usually that skin flap ends near the midway of tooth. now if your child's frenulum is touching the exposed part of teeth than the space between anteriors is just due to that frenulum and the surgical removal will close this gap but if everything is normal and the space is between permanent teeth, than you need to visit an orthodontist for braces work. S/he will take the impression of your teeth and will give you an appropriate appliance.

  • There is no need to go for frenectomy at such young age as the milk teeth are already out and the adult teeth will replace these teeth at the age of around 7 years. So you can wait for couple of years but you should get is done before the adult teeth start erupting ie around 6 years of age. If you get is done now or later it is not going to make any difference as the frenectomy is done so that gap between front two teeth is closed and this matters in adult teeth only and sometimes this frenum which is a soft tissue attachment recedes itself and there is no need even to get the frenectomy done. You can take your child to child dental specialist Pedodontist to get the expert advice. For more info on frenectomy you can read this article..
