Hi last yr my front teeth had started slight peeling and redness over one tooth. Now it is peeling around front upper 4 teeth and my sinuses get very dry from A/C. I sleep with mouth open and wake up with dry eyes. I am worried and was told to do biopsy of it. Saw reg. dentist. Should I see peridontist now or just do the biopsy. ENT said it is dry mouth/eyes. I am in perimenopausal now for last 1.5 yrs. Could it be very serious? I have gone thru lots of stress in last 3 yrs . THanks

  • Noa, Lichen planus is like a rash which is itchy and is recurrent. It can be of reticular type or erosive type. There is no specific cause of lichen planus. It can be because of smoking or alcohol or allergy to some medication or some other disease. Patches are not just restricted to mouth in case of lichen planus and may also involve skin. Candidiasis occurs because of fungal infection and can be because of stress, medications or weak immune system. Antifungal medicaments are given to treat candidiasis. With clinical examination and after some histologic tests, an oral pathologist can give definite diagnosis whether it is candida or lichen planus.

  • thanks for the reply. I did ck out my gums and they think it is lichenplantis. My diet of too many fruits in morning could have caused this? how to tell if not candida?

  • Peeling of the gums can be because of some allergic reaction to tooth paste or can be because of some chemical burn on the gums or can be because of dryness of mouth or some other problem. Without clinical examination, it is difficult to give exact diagnosis. You can refer to a periodontist who is a gum specialist. There is nothing to worry about if your dentist told you to get biopsy done. Oral biopsy is done to make a confirm diagnosis and to rule out any malignant condition. By that time, you can do warm saline rinses and maintain good oral hygiene.  Take more of fluids to avoid dryness of mouth.
