  • Bad odor from gums can occur in case of gum infection present or in case of plaque and calculus deposits present in relation to teeth. If you have dental crowns or bridges present, then failure of cement seal of the prosthesis and bacteria leak can also lead to bad odor from mouth. Change in color of gums signifies gum infection. Without clinical examination, it is difficult to give definite diagnosis. You have to visit your dentist for definite diagnosis and treatment. If gum infection is cause of bad smell from gums, then treatment of gum infection is done. If gingivitis is present, then dentist can do dental cleaning and if gum infection is severe and periodontitis is present, then dental cleaning, root planning and periodontal surgery may also be required. It is important that you maintain good oral hygiene to remove the deposits which are present around teeth. Brush twice daily after breakfast and at night before going to bed and also do flossing to remove the deposits which are present interdentally. Along with brushing and flossing, you can also use a mouth wash which is a chemical adjunct to plaque removal. If there is old dental crown present, then dental crown can be removed and underlying tooth can be evaluated.
