My husband had his wisdom teeth removed 4 months ago and he is still having a lot of problems. The tooth was impacted so it took surgery to remove it. He still cannot fully open his mouth, the front part of his face/lip is still numb, and he still has a large amount of pain that hinders the food he eats. He went back to the oral surgeon and he said that everything was healing very well, just slow. I have never heard of this taking 4 + months to heal. Should we go to another dentist or does this sound right?

  • Wajahat, If it was a difficult surgical tooth extraction, then healing of extraction socket may take longer and it may take 3-4 months for complete healing to take place. Pain at site of healing can be because of food accumulates or deposits or some infection present. Make sure to keep extraction socket area clean to avoid any secondary infections and continue with warm saline rinses. If pain doesn't regress, then you can visit your oral surgeon for evaluation.

  • i am also suffering from the same problem. Its been almost three months that my wisdom tooth has been extracted by my dentist. because it was pushing then other teeth's and thus causing swear pain in the whole jaw. The point of difference is i was feeling comfortable since last week and now there is pain at that which is healing.

  • After surgical  wisdom tooth extraction, the healing takes long. It may take 3 months to 1 year for complete recovery depending upon the type of impaction. if the tooth is badly implacted then lot of bone has to be cut and sometimes the surgeon has to go very near to the nerve and there may be injury to nerve also which is sometimes unavoidable but the full recovery of every thing takes palce. Due to close proximation of tooth to the nerve after extraction, nubness is felt and it takes time for the nerve to regenerate. After the nerve healing is complete and bone formation is there, the numbness and the pain goes away. If you are very apprehensive, you can take second opinion buy in my opinion you can wait upto 6 months. In between you can do warm saline rinses and maintain good oral hygiene so that secondary infection does not take place.
