4 years ago I had a root canal done to # 16 and dentist proceded to install a crown to that tooth. 1 year later pain was present XRAY was taken and we can see there is a small infection in the 3rd root (no post) of the tooth therefore dentist instructed me to see an specialist (surgery) to get an apicectomy. I never went. 2 years have passed and I just got more excruciating pain again Xray shows an infection. Dentist 1 - Recommends an apicectomy (500 to 600$) Dentist 2 - Recommends redo of Root Canal and crown (2000 - 2300$) Dentist 3 - Recommends BOTH Root canal and apicectomy ( 3000$) I really do not know what to do. I just finished taking the antibiotics, pain went away but I just DO NOT KNOW what to do. Please help.

  • As per your information you have mentioned that it is #16 tooth that means it is the third molar or the left wisdom tooth. If it is so then you have to see whether there is any use of saving that tooth as the re root canal treatment or the apicectomy both will not be very successful in that case. If it is any other tooth then the decision of whether to go for re root canal treatment depends upon the amount of infection and the bone loss. If the tooth is crowned then it is better to go for the apicectomy.
