  • Fistula around tooth suggests that there is infection still present in the tooth. Fistula is body’s way of finding an outlet to release some pressure from infection. Dark spot in x-rays also suggest that infection is still left in the tooth. Microflora can proliferate through the tooth and can cause fistula formation. If tooth is still infected after re-root canal treatment, then apicoectomy or tooth extraction is done to remove the infection. In case of Apicoectomy, surgical removal of root apex is done to remove the infection. Tooth extraction may also need to be done for infected tooth. If extraction is done, then the missing tooth can be replaced with dental implants or dental bridge. Without clinical examination and without seeing the x-rays, it is difficult to give definite treatment plan.  You can visit your dentist for evaluation and treatment.
