Had root canal done on upper right front tooth about 20 yrs ago. Now I am getting numbness on right upper lip & right side of nose sometimes. Feels like I just had a novocain shot. No pain, just feels weird for about 15/20 minutes & goes away. This is happening more frequent. Does it should like I might need a new root canal done on this same front tooth? Thanks for your time, Jo

  • Firstly you have to ascertain that whether the tooth is infectious or not. Numbness can be because of infectious tooth or can be because of some systemic cause.  Dentist will do clinical examination and will take an X-ray to see whether the tooth is infectious. There might be some other infected tooth present in the mouth which is causing the numbness.  If the root canal treated tooth is infectious, then re-root canal treatment can be done for the tooth and if there is some other infected tooth present, then the infection should be treated.  Without clinical and radiographic examination, it is difficult to give exact diagnosis. You have to refer to your dentist for this. If no dental cause is found, then you have to refer to your physician for this.
