The bone in the top of my mouth has deteriorated and the specialist needs to do a bone grafting where he pulls out all my top teeth and rebuilds the bone. Then I'll have a retainer-like plate on the top of my mouth that he said will feeling like I'm gagging and there is going to be lots of swelling. I'm a nervous wreck. What can I expect? Will there be a lot of pain and for how long?

  • Yes if there is severe bone loss then you have to go for bone grafting. After bone grafting the pain and discomfort will be there for a week to 10 days but you will be precribed medications for that, which will take care of pain, discomfort and swelling. The retainer you have to wear longer, may be for 3 weeks or more depending upon the prognosis. The retainer is given to give proper shape to arch. So donot be very anxious and go for the treatment otherwise getting dentures or dental implants at later stage will be a problem. For more info on bone grafting you can read this article...
