my daughter is almost 8 yrs old, she goes to the dentist regularly and has tooth number 25 coming in, her gums around this tooth are bright red, swollen and very painful. What could this be? Her dentist is out of the office for 2 more days.

  • Swollen, bright red and painful gums are can be due to food impaction in that area or can be because of some trauma or some secondary infection in that area.  Your daughter has to maintain a good oral hygiene to avoid any food impaction or infections. She can do warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day to reduce the gum swelling which is present around the erupting tooth. She has to brush and floss regularly to avoid food accumulates in between the teeth which will further cause pain on eruption of the teeth.  Cold compresses or piece of ice in gauze can be applied to the eruption site. Application of cold will provide numbing effect and may provide temporary relief for few minutes.
