  • Sensitivity of one side of molars can be there because of root exposure or can occur because of decay in molars on one side or can occur because of tooth wear. Gum recession occurs when the gums which surround teeth move towards the end of root exposing more of tooth structure. Various causes of root exposure are plaque induced gingival inflammation, faulty tooth brushing, tooth malpositioning in dental arch, traumatic bite, grinding of teeth etc. Root exposure causes sensitivity to cold food stuffs and for treatment of gums recession, use of desensitizing tooth paste, restoration or periodontal surgery is done. Decay in teeth which has reached dentin can also lead to sensitivity to cold food stuffs. In case of decay, restoration can be done with composite filling material which is tooth colored, esthetic filling material. Difficulty in opening the mouth wide can be because of wisdom tooth eruption or can be there because of teeth grinding or TMJ problem. If wisdom teeth are erupting, then you can do warm saline rinses 3-4 times a day. Avoid eating from that side of wisdom tooth and keep wisdom tooth area clean. If you are in habit of teeth grinding, then mouth guards can be given to relax the jaw muscles. You can visit your dentist for evaluation and treatment. By the time you visit your dentist, you can use desensitizing tooth paste to reduce the sensitivity.
