On May 2009 I had a root canal done in WA. Later on I had a crown over it. Recently I had a cleaning and X rays and I was told I had a shadow at the end of the root canal indicating an infection. (I was told the old root canal didn't get to the end of the molar). I was seen by an endodontist and he suggested I do another root canal to fix it and take care of the infection. Is it possible after 2 years w/o any problems, pain or swelling? Should I wait or have done right away? What would happen if I wait? Thank you.

  • I was told I needed re-treatment due to a shadow showing infection. Paid over $1000 and now, 5 months later it feels the same and a new x ray shows the same shadow :(

  • If a shadow is visible in the x-ray after the root canal treatment, it suggests infection in the tooth. Infection can occur in the root canal treated tooth if the root canal is not performed properly or if some infection is left in the tooth during the procedure.  Severe infection in the gums can also lead to tooth infection. The infection can cause pain and swelling later on and may cause some other complication. You can get re-root canal treatment for your tooth to remove the infection. In re-root canal treatment, the old root canal filling is removed and after removing the infection, the filling is done again.  You can get root canal retreatment now only.  Without clinical and radiographic examination, it is difficult to give definite opinion. You can take the opinion of a second dentist if you want.
