In 2007 I was diagnosed with TMJ disorder and have been sleeping with a occlusal splint since then. I understand that heat-cured acrylic resin is used as the material of it. I was wondering if there are any long term risks with using the splint. By long term, I'm asking if the plastic could scrap off and be swallowed while one is sleeping, thus leading to diseases (i.e. cancer). Is the heat-cured acrylic resin safe with the way it is being used (sleeping with it) ? thank you

  • No,it is not harmful as the occlusal splint is made of the same material from which the dentures are made. It is chemically inert when it is heat cured. There is no leaching of any chemicals. and if by wering it goes inside it is not harmful. so there is no long term harmful effects on the body.
