Last night, I dropped my splint into some dirty water - what would be the best way to clean it? I wanted to use hydrogen peroxide, but I didn't because I didn't know if it would be safe for the splint.

  • Splints are given to treat TMJ disorders or are given in patients of bruxism to relax the jaw muscles. To clean the splint, you can gently brush the splint with splint brush provided with the dentist. With lukewarm water, clean the splint. Don’t use hot water or keep the splints near heater as it can lead to melting of plastic. To remove excessive odor and staining of splint, you can also soak the splint in mixture of equal amounts of cold water and vinegar or can soak it in cold water with 2 table spoons of baking soda in it. Soak splint in it for 20-30 minutes. Cold water and denture cleaning solution can also be used to clean the splint. Mild detergent with cold water can also be used to clean the splint. You can also soak the splint in some mild antiseptic solution to disinfect it. No staining of splint should occur by solution. Method of cleaning occlusal splints is somewhat similar to cleaning of dentures. For more info on denture cleaning, visit…..
