On thursday I had 21 teeth extracted and full temp dentures put in. This was done in Juarez Mexico. Friday morning my face was a little puffy with a large bruise on the jaw area but this morning I woke to find my whole face swollen with bruising around right eye and along right edge of jawbone. My right eye was almost swelled shut and the glands under my chin are very swollen. I am taking clindamycin, ibuprofen and vicodin and when I can stand the pain enough, I take out the dentures and swill with warm salt water although the pain is ungodly trying to get the dentures back in. Is this about par for the course? Or should I go to the ER? Thanks for your help. Suki

When the immediate temporary dentures are given after full mouth extractions, like your case, then pain and swelling is there but normally it is controlled by antibiotics and pain killers and warm saline rinses. If pain and swelling is untolerable then it is better you go to ER and donot take chance. It is difficult assess your condition with clinical examination. In this condition when the dentures are removed, it is difficult ot put them back and pain and swelling has taken place. Rather you should not try to put them back till the swelling reduces a bit and you can insert the dentures easily. You should not force the dentures in the mouth. After removing the dentures if the condition is not deteriorating then you can wait and show it to your regular dentist but otherwise if the swelling is increasing even after removing the dentures then it is better to visit ER.
