  • Gums can become reddish purple in case of gum infection present. Gum infection can lead to swelling of the gums, bleeding of gums and can cause discoloration of gums. When only gum tissue is involved, then the condition is called as gingivitis but when attachment loss and bone loss occurs and spread of infection occurs in deeper tissues, then periodontal infection occurs. Purple gums and tooth ache can also be there because of trauma to the gums or can occur because of infected tooth. Without clinical examination and without seeing the x-rays, it is difficult to give definite diagnosis. You can visit your dentist for definite diagnosis and treatment. If there is gum infection present, then dental cleaning and root planning is required. If tooth is infected, then root canal treatment may be required for the tooth.  By the time, you visit your dentist, you can do warm saline rinses for some relief and if pain is severe, then you can also take otc pain med. Maintain good oral hygiene to avoid any food accumulates around teeth.  For more info on gum diseases, refer to…..
