Good day Last year I went to the dentist for the first time in years. When the dentist saw my upper jaw he told me that my gums in the inner side of my mouth in the back was swollen. My mouth as been like that for years and I thought thats just the way it was supposed to look. He also called it a type of gel and that I should go to a mouth and jaw specialist to cut it out. Do you have any more info of this and what is it, can it be dangerous? Kind regrds Wessel

  • Swelling of gums can occur because of plaque and calculus deposits in relation to teeth. Some medications, hormonal alterations, stress, vitamin C deficiency and oral habits like smoking can also lead to enlargement in size of gums. Benign and malignant tumors and some diseases like diabetes, sarcoidosis etc can also lead to swelling of the gums. Inflammatory gum enlargement can occur because of gingival or periodontal abscess. Without clinical examination, it is difficult to tell exact cause of gum enlargement in your case. For treatment of gum swelling, dental cleaning and root planning is required. Periodontal surgery may also be required for treatment of gum enlargement. Gingivectomy procedure may also be performed in which excess of gum tissue is removed. If there is gum infection present, then it is important to treat it. Gum infection can progress further and lead to bone loss and tooth mobility.
