Pain and swelling adjacent to the tooth indicates infection in the tooth either due to decay or due to deposits [tartar] around the tooth leading infection of gums. You are advised to visit the dentist and the x-ray done. The dentist may prescribe the required medicines and do the treatment. Till you visit the dentist if pain is more then take mild analgesics and do warm salt water rinses 2-3 times a day.Avoid eating from that side.Also,maintain good oral hygiene.Brush twice daily and floss atleast once a day.
