I got my braces removed four years ago. Since then, I have dutifully worn my retainer every single night. However, a couple of days ago, it got thrown away by accident. Do I need to go purchase a new one? I do still have a permanent one glued to my bottom teeth.

  • The duration for which the retainers are worn varies from case to case. Sometimes the retainers have to be worn almost lifelong whereas in some cases, you have to wear retainers day and night for 6 months and wear them at night for next 1 year. You should follow the instruction given by your orthodontist as he is best to tell this as he has done the treatment and knows how much chances of relapse are there in your case.  If you have to wear the retainers for life time, then you can even opt for fixed retainers which are fixed at the back of the teeth and are not visible and don’t create any problem You can consult your dentist and if he says that you need to wear retainers for some more time, then you can get a new one.For more info on retainers after braces, you can read this article in our website.... http://www.identalhub.com/dental-how-long-i-have-to-wear-retainer-after-braces-522.aspx
